David Mead, The Dancing Times
Based in Hong Kong, I am a twenty-two year old, independent artist and graduate of The School of Ballet Theatre UK. I regularly tour full-length classical ballets such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker in Europe and enjoy developing new works with choreographers as well as coaching students around the world.
Passion for life is what energises my work. As I absorb myself in each moment – be it to appreciate our world or to embrace challenge and perform at my best – I am excited by the chance to learn from the experience and develop as both an artist and a person. As much as the performance of our art, I love the process that is imperfect and enables us to evolve into the beauty.
Beyond the Royal Academy of Dance, in which my technique is founded, I am fortunate also to have been guided by a multitude of teachers in the French, Cuban, Russian and North American styles. Each has inspired me and enhanced my work uniquely.
Studying in the UK, I had explored both George Balanchine and the American Ballet Theater National Training Curriculum. The season I subsequently spent with Madison Ballet gave me firsthand exposure to American dancers, choreographers and directors, whilst immersing me in the culture that fuels them. This has been my most tangible experience of the contrasts in dance methodology, which I found directly related to my impressions of the country.
I have been told that my strongest asset is my mind. As a younger student, I could not appreciate the comment but now realise that intent observation, analysis and reflection have been, and continue to be, crucial to my progress. It is an honour to bear witness to choreographers’ processes and to have been very often entrusted to take on roles at short notice, make personal contributions to new works and lead rehearsals.
Mr. Norton Fantinel and Ms. Karina Moreira were Guest Principals in Swan Lake during my second year at school. Keen to lend a hand backstage, I was able to observe and interact with them throughout the tour, which gave me much insight. I particularly enjoyed, beyond the consistency in their technique, the sincerity of each performance because of the passion that is in their nature and bursts forth when they dance. This is the artist I strive to be.
