David Mead, The Dancing Times
Currently in the corps of the International Classical Ballet of Ukraine, I am a twenty-two year-old graduate of The School of Ballet Theatre UK. I have performed as a Trainee with Madison Ballet (Wisconsin, USA) and as a student at Dupont Dance Stage School (Leicester, UK) and Ballet West Scotland, developing versatile movement quality in contemporary, jazz, tap and choreography alongside a focus on classical ballet.
Passion for life is what energises my work. As I absorb myself in each moment – be it to appreciate our world or to embrace challenge and perform at my best – I am excited by the chance to learn from the experience and develop as both an artist and a person. As much as the performance of our art, I love the process that is imperfect and enables us to evolve into the beauty.
I am fortunate to have learnt from a multitude of teachers who have developed my understanding in the French, Cuban, Russian and North American styles as well as the British. Each has inspired me uniquely, and I aim to hold their essence in my work.
At school, I studied George Balanchine – credited with the development of the American style – and, alongside it, the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum. With foundations in the Royal Academy of Dance, I am increasingly fascinated by the contrasts in dance methodology. Now, I am delighted to have experienced, first-hand, American dancers, choreographers and the culture that inspires them. At the outset of a career, I feel enriched as both an artist and a person.
I have been told that my strongest asset is my mind. As a younger student, I could not appreciate the comment but now realise that intent observation, analysis and reflection have been, and continue to be, crucial to my progress. It is an honour to bear witness to choreographers’ processes and to have been entrusted by some to make personal contributions or lead rehearsals.
Mr. Norton Fantinel and Ms. Karina Moreira were Guest Principals in Swan Lake during my second year. Keen to lend a hand backstage, I was able to observe and interact with them throughout the tour, which gave me much insight. I particularly enjoyed the uniqueness of each performance because of the passion that is in their nature and bursts forth when they dance. This is the artist I aspire to be.
